This position serves our partners at the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). MNIT MDE manages the technical functions critical to managing public education in Minnesota; supporting systems including funding disbursement and large-scale, public-facing school performance data reporting.
The Senior Java Web Application Developer will support the Minnesota Department of Education's (MDE) custom-developed web-based applications effort. This position is responsible for leading the design and implementation of large and complex computer systems, ensuring the seamless operation of existing web-based computer programs, and overseeing the technical design of agency systems, business practices, and process automation. As a Senior Java Web Application Developer, you will serve as a lead worker guiding and coaching advanced technical specialists on systems and projects of the greatest scope and complexity. The responsibilities may include long-range planning and the design of system architecture and structure, analyzing, designing, and approving systems, networks, and applications.
In addition, this position will be required to work closely with agency senior management to analyze business processes and recommend and design automation procedures that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the agency's operations. This role requires a high level of expertise in both technical and managerial aspects, as you will be responsible for leading other IT professionals in development efforts and ensuring that systems align with the strategic goals of the agency.
This position is currently eligible for full-time telework: - Telework for Minnesota IT Services allows an employee to perform work from a telework location and an employee may be required to be in the office based on business needs and other dependencies in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Resume tips here. : Position requires a minimum of five (5) years of IT related experience as a Full Stack Java Developer, developing complete object-oriented Java web applications including analysis, design, implementation, build scripting, and unit testing.
Experience must include:
- Experience with web application frameworks such as Spring Framework or Spring Boot.
- Experience in Azure app development and migration and GitHub Actions.
- Hands-on experience with web page user interface design using HTML3, CSS3, JavaScript, and React.
- Proficiency in SQL database creation, modification, and querying.
- Knowledge of database integration technologies such as JDBC and Hibernate
- Familiarity with source control systems such as GitHub or Subversion
- Ability to deliver effective verbal or written messages that facilitate a mutual understanding on both parties.
- Customer service skills that include active listening, empathy, and problem-solving.
A master’s degree in Information Technology or an IT related field substitutes for three (3) years of experience, OR an IT related bachelor’s degree substitutes for two (2) years, OR an IT related associate’s degree substitutes for one (1) year.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience with Groovy and Grails.
- Experience with cloud technologies and microservice development.
- Extensive experience with web application performance analysis and optimization.
- Ability to integrate third-party libraries into applications.
- Experience with build script development tools such as ANT, Gradle, or Maven.
- Experience leading projects and/or teams and mentoring junior developers.
- Advanced skills in using and configuring IDEs such as IntelliJ and Visual Studio and source control systems such as GitHub.
