Job Description

Position Overview:

BACR’s Career Pathways division serves as the link to jobs, careers and post-secondary education. Career/academic coaches ensure participants have an understanding of high-growth sectors and careers, training and college options, and immediate employment opportunities. Career Coaches work with participants one on one in order to create participant centered career and education plans, which are designed to help them reach the short and long-term goals that will lead to economic self-sufficiency.

Applicants should have experience serving youth and adult ages 14-24 years old within the following priority populations: Justice involved, system impacted, undocumented, disconnected from education, unemployed and underemployed, public housing residents from San Francisco, foster care, pregnant and parenting. All applicants should be able to act with a sense of urgency, carry a caseload of 40 to 50 clients, should be confident with problem solving skills and be innovative in working with multi barrier youth and adults.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to work full time (Mon-Fri, possible to work some evenings and periodic Saturdays)
  • Successful completion of Live Scan/fingerprinting (upon hire)
  • 3+ years’ experience in the Workforce field
  • 3+ years’ experience working with multi barrier youth and/or adults ages 14-24 years old
  • 3+ years’ experience with workshop facilitation/lesson planning
  • 3+ years’ experience with college counseling or college access support
  • 3+ years’ experience working with system involved youth and young adults
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, and communication skills (oral and written)
  • Bilingual in Spanish; able to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking participants and families, providing support and resources in their preferred language
  • Knowledge and experience with Youth Development, Restorative Justice, and Trauma-Responsive practices
  • Familiarity with working with marginalized groups, including undocumented, transitional-aged youth and adults, and understanding the criminal justice system's impact on these communities
  • High personal accountability, professionalism, and positive relationship-building with participants served
  • Skilled in problem-solving, prioritizing under pressure, and working in ambiguous situations with flexibility, innovation, and self-direction
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, with a proactive approach to seeking support when needed
  • Valid California Driver’s License, with an insured, registered vehicle for work purposes
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and database software, including creating and managing PDFs and shared files
  • Experience with data entry and analysis
  • Ability to be on call when needed

Preferred :

  • Bachelor’s degree or attending college currently
  • Knowledgeable of Bay Area communities and career and education resources
  • High level of personal accountability for the quality and impact of work, with the ability to handle multiple projects accurately and on time
  • Experience working with undocumented, transitional-aged youth and adults in the Bay Area, with empathy for diverse racial, ethnic, disability, gender, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural backgrounds
  • Skilled in independently assessing crisis situations and taking initiative when needed
  • Strong attention to detail, with a proactive approach to managing tasks and deadlines
  • Ability to empathize with colleagues and individuals from racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic and cultural diversity backgrounds

Senior Career Coach Responsibilities:

  • Support Career Pathway projects, including career panels, college trips, advisory boards, and college success labs
  • Coordinate with workshop staff to develop new career and employment readiness workshops
  • Serve as the primary resource for post-secondary education and vocational training opportunities in San Francisco
  • Build and maintain relationships with high schools, GED services, colleges, vocational training, and CTE programs in San Francisco
  • Develop curriculum to inform participants on in-demand and emerging career fields
  • Represent BACR’s Career Pathway team at San Francisco workforce meetings
  • Foster positive relationships with community partners, institutions, and employers
  • Complete required evaluations, reports, and assessments, and track and submit documents on schedule
  • Monitor and approve staff timesheets as needed
  • Participate in all meetings, workshops, and activities organized by BACR and district agencies
  • Conduct work in alignment with BACR Best Practices and youth development principles

Job Coaching, Career Advising and Job Development Responsibilities:

  • Meet with participants regularly in person to monitor career action plans, providing daily or weekly informal check-ins through phone, text, and email as needed
  • Create and monitor short- and long-term educational and career plans using work readiness assessments
  • Refer participants to relevant services and accompany them when needed to ensure access to additional programs
  • Troubleshoot workplace issues with participants, providing conflict resolution guidance, one-on-one training, and support
  • Train worksite supervisors on best practices for supervising interns and advise participants on career growth based on industry standards
  • Conduct industry-specific assessments to evaluate participants' readiness for targeted career pathways
  • Collaborate frequently with case managers to coordinate case planning, and participate in case conferencing sessions to ensure aligned support
  • Maintain relationships with local employers to create internship and long-term job placements for participants
  • Offer ongoing job coaching and advising for program alumni, as needed
  • Accurately maintain case notes and participant data in BACR’s database and any funder databases
  • Write character and recommendation letters for court on behalf of participants when necessary

Academic Support, College Access and Post-secondary Retention Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with external providers to support participants' educational and wellness plans
  • Offer one-on-one guidance for first-year college students on financial aid, debt minimization, and making informed post-secondary choices
  • Equip participants with financial literacy skills to minimize debt and navigate financial aid options for degree completion
  • Monitor academic progress through regular counseling and review of progress reports and report cards
  • Guide participants through the college enrollment process, including UC/CSU navigation and FAFSA applications
  • Model and teach effective problem-solving, self-advocacy, academic mindset, self-regulation, persistence, and positive behavior
