Job Description

Westtown School seeks a Lower School Assistant Principal beginning July 1, 2025. This is a full-time, 12-month position. The primary responsibility is to assist the Lower School Principal in implementing Westtown’s mission and vision in grades pre-K through 5th grade. We seek a master teacher with deep experience in elementary pedagogy, curriculum development, differentiation, and student support. The Assistant Principal will be responsible for setting and maintaining community tone and expectations and the thoughtful and consistent application of the Lower School’s policies and practices, including student discipline. The Lower School Assistant Principal reports to the Lower School Principal, and in the absence of the Principal, the Assistant acts as the administrator in charge of the division. The Lower School Assistant Principal also collaborates and communicates daily with the Lower School Administrative Assistant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of daily operations (i.e., arrival and dismissal procedures, teaching coverage and substitutes);
  • Responsible for student conflict resolution, restorative practices, and discipline in collaboration with teachers and the Student Support Team, in consultation with the Principal, and in partnership and communication with families;
  • Coaching and mentoring teachers in classroom management practices, social-emotional programming, and building a positive classroom community, in partnership with the Principal and the Assistant Head of School for Program and Community;
  • Mentorship and support of assistant teachers and substitute teachers; 
  • Support the Principal and the Assistant Head of School for Program and Community in faculty observations and evaluation;
  • Support the Principal in reviewing student reports and comments;
  • Member of the Lower School Student Support Team;
  • Collaborate with the MooseKids after-school program leadership team on matters related to students and alignment of community tone and expectations;
  • Analyze and evaluate the current MooseKids after-school program model and develop a proposal to further grow and develop the program;
  • Partner with the Principal in planning professional development for Lower School faculty;
  • Assist in hiring Lower School faculty and staff; 
  • Attend enrollment and community events as needed; 
  • Work with the 5th-grade teachers and the 6th Grade Dean to create and provide a robust transitional program for students and families moving from Lower to Middle School.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in education, educational leadership, or a related field (advanced degree or training, preferred) with at least 12 years of experience teaching Lower School students;
  • Leadership experience in education (e.g., teaching coach, mentor, education/program director, leader of professional development);
  • Familiarity with student-centered pedagogies and philosophies (e.g., progressive education, Montessori, choice-based learning, project-based learning, Responsive Classroom, restorative practices);
  • Demonstration of continuous professional development, showing growth as an educator and leader;
  • A collegial and supportive management style with a commitment to collaborative decision-making;
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to respond to complex, urgent situations calmly and efficiently;
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;
  • Excellent initiative and follow-through;
  • Diplomacy, tact, and discretion with confidential information;
  • Proficiency with school-based technology systems and apps (e.g., Google Workspace, Blackbaud, Google Classroom, Canvas)
