Construction Surveyor

Chicagoland Area – Fully Onsite

$80–130K (Depending on Experience) – Full Time with Benefits

Take your career to the next level with us! R.M. Chin & Associates, Inc. (R.M. Chin) is seeking an experienced Construction Surveyor. This candidate will be responsible for providing surveys and data collection to our Transportation Groups Design and Construction Departments. Your primary duties will involve traveling to different construction projects throughout the Chicago-land area using the latest survey equipment (Trimble GPS and Total Station) to survey pay item quantities and verify contractor layout for various infrastructure improvements.

Job Duties:

  • Direct and prepare field crews for construction staking, topographic mapping, and other related land survey tasks.
  • Survey related deliverables, computations, resolutions, boundary plates, topo base plans, and exhibits utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D and MicroStation.
  • Use specialized surveying equipment like GPS, and total stations to verify layout measure distances, angles, elevations, and calculate pay item quantities on site.
  • Survey of cut and fill earthwork quantities, verification of contractor layout, verifying critical elevations of bridge and structure elements, storm sewer elevations, and multiple layers of a roadway structure.
  • Record field data accurately in field notes.
  • Analyze survey data using computer-aided design (CAD) software to create accurate maps and plates.
  • Generate detailed survey reports with findings and recommendations for clients.
  • Interpret and apply relevant land surveying laws and regulations.
  • Consult with clients to understand their survey needs and project requirements.
  • Prepare survey schedules to ensure projects are on time and within budget projections and meet client’s requirements and expectations.
  • Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Prepare clear and comprehensive reports and technical correspondence.
  • Conduct field reconnaissance to identify key survey control points and establish benchmarks.
  • Utilize advanced surveying instruments such as GPS and Total Station to collect accurate and reliable data.
  • Perform topographic, boundary, and construction surveys as per project needs.
  • Ensure the proper calibration and maintenance of survey equipment.
  • Process survey data using relevant software, including AutoCAD, to generate precise maps and drawings.
  • Analyze survey data for accuracy and consistency, making necessary adjustments as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in land surveying or a related field.
  • Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a project surveyor, or in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience with MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Civil3D is preferred.
  • Experience with “field to finished deliverables” procedures and methods.
  • Ability to react positively to difficult project assignments and/or client representatives.
  • Expertise in surveying equipment and technology.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with processing GPS data. Prior use of Trimble Business Center (TBC) is preferred.
