Job Description

Job Summary:

The Career Coach supports young adults, ages 18-25, in developing and reaching their education and employment goals.

The POIC Work Opportunities Training department aims to support underserved youth on a path to self-sufficiency and economic success by providing opportunities for skill building, training, and work experience. Career Coaches work in partnership with POIC community-based programs to address barriers youth and young adults face to employment and educational attainment. POIC employment contracts are complex and tied to long-term outcomes for young adults. As such, it is critical that POIC Career Coaches possess the ability to connect with participants on a personal level and maintain meticulous records and data.


Essential Duties:


Participant engagement and coaching:

  • Outreach, recruit, enroll, and maintain a caseload of up to 40 participants, ages 18-25.
  • Engage participants in an in-depth goal-setting and monitoring process; meet regularly with participants to implement individualized plans to achieve short and long-term goals.
  • Build professional relationships with participants and support them in addressing barriers to employment and educational achievement; serve as professional mentor, coach, and advocate.
  • Empower participants to inform program design and model to ensure youth voice in services.
  • Collaborate with WorkSource Portland Metro to engage participants in services and provide participants with access to workforce development resources.

Case management and data management:

  • Document all participant interactions, progress, participation, and data in workforce development-specific database system on a daily basis.
  • Maintain detailed, organized, and updated files (paper and digital), in compliance with local and federal government contractors.
  • Prepare for quarterly program and file audits.
  • Track and report on participant outcomes.

Training, facilitation, and curriculum development:

  • Plan and facilitate lessons on work readiness, employment and life skills, and career exploration and pathways.
  • Develop culturally responsive, innovative, and engaging curriculum designed to build employability and life skills of participants.
  • Research promising practices of youth engagement, workforce training, and approaches to alleviating poverty in low income communities to ensure program model is dynamic and responsive to participant needs.

Collaboration and community engagement:

  • Collaborate with Work Opportunities Training (WOT) team and other POIC departments to deliver services across program sites.
  • Offer transition support for Rosemary Anderson Prep seniors working towards graduation; support RA Prep staff in efforts to prepare students for success in post-secondary endeavors.
  • Develop and build relationships with local businesses and employers, education and training providers, and other community-based agencies to enhance services and opportunities for participants.
  • As member of WOT team, develop monthly and annual goals and strategies, monitor progress, and report on outcomes.
  • All POIC staff is required to participate in ongoing professional development related to our organizational expectations centered on personal growth, leadership, and accountability.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Experience/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working with youth/ young adults in a school or community-based setting.
  • Experience in workforce development, youth employment, and youth development programming preferred.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed practice and strength-based approaches to working with participants preferred.
