Top Gifts For Travelers: Tried & Tested

A Quick Word Before You Shop

Before you add that gift to your cart, let me share some advice. If you’re shopping for a friend, it helps to know a bit about them. What’s their favorite color? Are they team Apple or Android? Do they prefer beaches or mountains? What do they do for work?

Any detail helps, but please, don’t call them up and ask directly. That would totally ruin the surprise.

Here’s why this matters: as a traveler, I value useful things. Items I can actually take on trips, things that genuinely improve my experience, or stuff I’ll use at home between adventures. Sure, the gesture always counts, but in a world of overconsumption, buying something just because feels wrong.

A thoughtful gift, even if it’s small and symbolic, beats something expensive but useless every time. When in doubt, ask yourself: will they actually use this frequently?

My Favorite Travel Gifts

Let me be honest: some of these aren’t cheap. But when you travel regularly, you stop wasting money on junk and start investing in quality items that last.

I don’t own much. I don’t buy many clothes or unnecessary things. But I care deeply about devices and quality gear that won’t break on me halfway across the world.

Smartphone

Starting strong with my most important recommendation.

Having my iPhone with me when I travel is essential (Android users, stick with me, I’ll get to you). These modern smartphones are absolute powerhouses. They let you record, photograph, take notes, make international calls with eSIM data, and keep you connected even in the most remote places.

They’re built to last, too. I’ve filmed underwater in Iceland with my iPhone and got incredible footage. I’ve taken mine to powerful waterfalls, sandy deserts, and freezing mountain peaks.

Some locations had weather so harsh my regular camera couldn’t handle it, but my smartphone captured everything. I can’t imagine the frustration of missing those moments.

That’s why a reliable smartphone tops my list of essential travel accessories. And yes, upgrading to the latest model is pure joy: the newest iPhone would be the ultimate gift.

For Samsung fans (and there are many of you), the latest Samsung S25 is equally impressive.

Headphones

I’m not a huge music person while traveling, but most people are. And even I need a quiet environment in busy airports or during long commutes.

A good pair of headphones with noise cancelling (like these JBLs) makes a fantastic gift for any traveler. I listen to Spotify playlists and audiobooks during trips, and quality headphones transform the experience.

Consider your friend’s ecosystem. If they use Apple, the latest AirPods Pro 3 is obvious (honestly, they’re the best). Want to go above and beyond? Get them Apple AirPods Max wireless over ear headphones. (They’ve been on my wishlist forever, but they feel too extra to buy myself. I’m waiting for someone to gift them to me.)

Anything from Apple delights someone already in the ecosystem. (I’m currently rocking a MacBook M4 Pro Max, thank you very much.)

SmartWatch

Tech gifts travel so easily, and a smartwatch that works underwater while swimming or showering makes an excellent companion, especially for fitness enthusiasts.

These devices track everything: steps, distance, heart rate, and so much more. I used to wear a Garmin during my running days (stopped because my knees gave out). A top smartwatch reduces phone dependency, which feels like a huge win.

For Apple users, the Apple Watch is the premium choice. Android users might love this health and fitness smartwatch from Garmin. It’s cute and tracks all your movement and more.

Tablet

Tablets offer incredible versatility. They can replace a laptop or simply provide entertainment.

Some friends use theirs exclusively for Netflix during their frequent commutes, and that alone justifies the purchase.

I recommend the Apple iPad Air as the best tablet on the market. You can do so much with it, and it’s stunning and smooth. Samsung offers alternatives (like the Galaxy Tab A9+), but if you want the absolute best, an iPad is unbeatable. It works for anyone, regardless of ecosystem.

Apple AirTag

This one’s specifically for Apple users.

I wouldn’t normally suggest it, but after Europe’s recent baggage crisis and widespread lost luggage, I won’t travel without one.

What’s an AirTag good for? Put one in your checked luggage and another in your carry on. It shows you their real time location on all your Apple devices: tablet, iPhone, or laptop.

I travel light, but this addition to the ecosystem provides serious peace of mind knowing your stuff is exactly where it should be.

Backpack

Not every traveler prefers backpacks. Definitely consider this before buying one.

I choose between a carry on and backpack depending on my destination. But I own a backpack that’s served me brilliantly in India, South America, and Europe.

When I started traveling, a backpack was one of my first purchases. If you want to help a friend start their travel journey and fulfill their dreams, this shows incredible thoughtfulness and support.

This lightweight 70 liter backpack is perfect. (I’d get one myself if my current backpack wasn’t still going strong.) Imagine the places this will see and endure.

Beyond the main backpack, travelers need a smaller daypack for essentials: snacks, passport, water, laptop. This Osprey 30L travel backpack is absolutely dreamy. It’ll become your friend’s go to item for years, and they’ll think of you every time they pack.

Essential Gifts for Any Traveler

If we’re talking useful gifts, I know exactly what travelers need and use.

I’ve bought these items multiple times. Honestly, if the only thing I know about someone is that they love traveling, these are my first considerations.

Universal Travel Adapter

Here’s a quality travel adapter.

When I travel internationally, packing my collection of travel adapters is essential. Even in Europe, where we mostly use the same plugs, it’s useful since the UK and former colonies use different ones.

This is thoughtful, practical, and useful for any traveler.

Anker Nano Power Bank

I’ve had my Anker power bank for at least four years, and I love it.

I recommend it to everyone (just as a fellow traveler recommended it to me). It’s worth the hype, lives up to the hype, and stays in my carry on for every trip.

Your travel buddy will thank you if they don’t already have one.

Portable Mini Bluetooth Speaker

This JBL speaker is perfect for music loving travelers. It’s small, lightweight, and lets you enjoy music without headphones (where you won’t bother others).

Even my father has one. Who doesn’t love music?
